Addressing Etiquette
- Invitations should be handwritten, printed or done in calligraphy. Address labels are not appropriate.
- Don’t abbreviate names or addresses.
- Use formal titles (Dr., Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms., Master).
Boys up to age seven are give the title as master. No title is used between seven and eighteen. At eighteen it becomes Mr.
Girls are given the title Miss until they are married or have mentioned a preference of Ms.
- If the woman’s prefix is unknown (Mrs., Ms., or Miss) use the title “Ms.”
- Married couples with young children can be written as “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family.”
- Men and women living together who are not married should be addressed with the names on separate lines.
- The return address should be printed or written on the back flap. This should be the address of the person or people hosting the event. Traditionally names are not included on a formal return address. If the unmarried couple are hosting the wedding and live together, the return address should be addressed to the bride only.
It will be up to you how closely you want to adhere to traditional rules.
